Collaborating with teachers has already started, and we’re feeling energized by all the project possibilities!

Vol. 60 🖐️ 5 Projects We’re Excited about this Year

We’ve wrapped our first month back at schools and our team is fully immersed in creative planning mode. Here are 5 awesome projects that we can’t wait to help co-teach.

🦴 Stone Age Technology Expo - Grade 7

What the project is:

Students will build replicas of Stone Age tools using everyday materials. Then, they’ll work in Canva to create interactive displays. When it’s time for their expo, their buddy classes will come to visit and be treated to a museum-like experience.

Why we’re excited:

Projects like this show how digital aspects can complement an existing project. Students get to show what they know about ancient tools by using modern ones! Instead of creating poster boards, they’ll develop interfaces that let their viewers explore a replica tool in an interactive way. And to top it all off, they’ll be presenting a real exhibit for their buddy class where they can see how others explore their interactive display.

🌎 Global Injustices Graphic Novel - Grade 6

What the project is:

Grade 6 students will explore global injustices through the creation of graphic novels. They will design comics that challenge their audience to take action and make positive changes in their lives, addressing issues like inequality, poverty, and child labour.

Why we’re excited:

A project like this is all about empowering student voices. We’re excited because students will get a chance to become advocates for change, using their voices to raise awareness through their own creations. We’re also excited to see the cross-curricular connections between Art, Social Studies, and Literacy deepen their understanding of important social issues.

🏛️ Portraying Politicians - Grade 5

BC Parliament in Victoria

What the project is:

This grade 5 class is diving into a unit about the Canadian Government, where they will create their own Federal Party. Small groups will design a party logo and slogan, craft a fictional candidate's backstory and platform, and produce promotional materials such as brochures, posters, and eventually a video written and performed by the students.

Why we’re excited:

This project allows students to combine their creativity with critical thinking on a timely subject. It’s a mix of learning about the structure and the function of the Canadian government, leadership and media literacy. It gets students thinking about political messages and how they are delivered. They'll build their skills in digital design and video production, while presenting their campaigns to an authentic audience in a mock election.

🌖 Moon Phase Digital Collages - Grade 4

Canva template for the upcoming project.

What the project is:

Students will create moon phases as a collage in Canva. They’ll explore the relative position of the earth, sun and moon by layering digital shapes.

Why we’re excited:

Canva is an incredible tool for making digital art and design. But this is the first time we’ve seen a project that uses Canva for experimentation! Learning how to manipulate layers is a valuable design skill that will help the class create more elaborate work in the future.

🎨 Painting with Robots - Grade K

Looks like fun!

What the project is:

Teaching colours is always fun (and messy). We’ve found a way to really mix things up and increase the fun factor. Kindergarten students will dip Spheros into red, blue, and yellow paint and then drive them around on large pieces of paper! What happens when the colours cross over each other? Secondary colours!

Why we’re excited:

We love how this project teaches colour theory and basic robotics seamlessly. Not only are students experimenting with direction and controlling robots, but the result is a beautiful piece of art that reveals itself as the experiment goes on!
