Hello, Readers!

Integrating technology into the classroom can feel like a daunting task, especially with younger students. However, a primary teacher found a creative solution to making this process less complicated and more fun! Want to know more about their simple, hands-on approach? Of course you do!

An App for That? No Need!

By Dylan Ismail

I had been brainstorming with a primary teacher named, Michelle, on how her students could get more comfortable with iPads without the pressure of using an app or completing a digital activity. We came up with the idea of a Light Lab – no this isn’t an app, but rather just a bright idea we collaborated on where her students would experiment with the built-in iPad camera to see how light affected different objects. Along with one of the EAs, we took groups of 4-5 students at a time, into the hallway to experiment. They started by adjusting the exposure to play with the amount of light — sort of like squinting your eyes. They then took pictures through coloured cellophane seeing how the colours mixed and affected the yellow flowers outside the window. Finally we took photos around corners using mirrors — this last activity was hilarious! 😂It took some trial and error, but we got some great funny faces in the mirrors, and some students even bounced their reflection off two mirrors!

Michelle and the students had a blast and learned not only some cool photography lessons, but also how to handle the iPads safely and comfortably.

Adding coloured cellophane in front of the ipad camera let's students experiment with filtering light.

This creative light lab experiment shows that using an iPad in the classroom of young students doesn’t have to be complicated. Why not try it yourself? Who knows, you might just light up the faces of your students!
