We know that it's important to set clear expectations with students about how iPads are used differently at school versus home. Many kids are excited to share how they use digital devices at home, but these classroom devices are specifically for projects and activities.
This lesson plan starts by having students imagine a valuable object that they own, getting them thinking about their own responsibility.
Let's run through the lesson slides.
Something special to you
🗣️ Say: Do you have a favourite toy or item at home that is really special to you?
👂 Listen For: Examples like a lego set, an instrument, or a new race car toy. We like highlighting objects that may be more delicate or precious to the kids.
Visualize your important item
🗣️ Say: Close your eyes and think of that important item. Try to see exactly what it looks like in your head!
🖊️ Do: Encourage them to think about how the object feels. Is it hard or soft, light or heavy, smooth or rough?
Draw your important item
🗣️ Say: Now draw your important item in as much detail as you can so we can all see what it is.
🖊️ Do: Give them plenty of time to draw.
Treat it with respect
🗣️ Say: How would you want your friend to treat your important item?
👂 Listen For: Hold it with two hands, treat it with respect, be careful and gentle with it!
How would you feel?
🗣️ Say: How would we feel if our friends treated our things this way?
👂 Listen For: “I would be sad!", "No way! That's not nice!"
iPads are important to you and your classmates
🗣️ Say: iPads are a really important item to you and your peers. You use them in this class, but we share these iPads with students in other classes as well. How should we promise to treat the iPads?
👂 Listen For: Hold iPad with two hands, walk don’t run when holding the iPad, no food or water near the iPad, sharing is caring.
🖊️ Do: If you’re projecting onto a whiteboard, write out the agreements around the projected iPad graphic like this.
Draw out one treatment agreement
🗣️ Say: Choose your favourite rule, and draw it out! We’re going to collect these and put them together to create a class handbook on how to use our iPads.
🖊️ Do: Give them plenty of time to draw.
Review your agreement
🗣️ Say: Let’s see if we can remember all the rules for the iPad Treatment Agreement!
👂 Listen For: The rules the class just decided on during the class discussion.

Extra Bytes
What does it take to create a “Just Try It” math class?
What did the iPad say to the Wi-Fi when they weren’t getting along? “We need to talk, I feel like we’ve lost connection.” What’s a computer’s favorite snack? “Microchips.” Have you ever heard the band 999 Megabytes? “No?” Oh, it's probably because they haven’t had their first Gig yet!
